Today I’m giving you a summary of the book “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz.
I enjoyed reading this book because it’s so inspiring. Indeed, the author gives us incredible energy to take charge of our lives and our happiness.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to you, if you want to feel more inspired and also more “equipped” to make your life more beautiful and serene, because this book is a pearl of wisdom.
In his book “The Four Agreements”, Don Miguel Ruiz explains that many of us are unhappy because of what we’ve learned since childhood.
In fact, he explains that 95% of the things we’ve learned lead us to suffering.
What have we learned? For example, how to behave in society: what to do and what not to do. Or how to think: what’s acceptable and what isn’t, what’s beautiful and what isn’t, what’s right and what’s wrong?
In fact, we learned through a reward-punishment system. When what we did wasn’t right, we were punished, and when what we did was right, we were rewarded.
We became addicted to rewards and developed a fear of punishment. So much so that today, we’re addicted to the other person’s gaze, and we’ll do anything to please them!
We’ve learned to play roles with our parents, our teachers, our friends, our colleagues… We’re real chameleons, and we suffer for it. Why do we suffer? Because we’re not ourselves. We’ve created a “perfect” image of what we’re supposed to be. Unfortunately, it’s impossible for us to live up to it.
“In the end we’ve become someone other than ourselves: copies of mom’s beliefs, dad’s beliefs, society’s beliefs and religion’s beliefs.”
Yet, despite our fear that others will see that we’re not good enough, not good enough, there’s a part of us that pushes us to want to be free, free to be ourselves.
