Relationships with others are not easy. Too much conflict or too much distance. How can we have warm contacts with others? In other words, how do you get along with others? Here are 3 tips.

1 – Don’t overdo it

We live in a society that makes us believe that to be an interesting person, you have to be an extrovert at all costs.

And this leads us to overdo it. Way too much.

The problem is that overdoing it can lead others to avoid us. Because, when we do too much, we’re too focused on ourselves and not at all on others.

In other words, we can end up being awkward and even embarrassing.

In concrete terms, we can walk into a room and make jokes, whereas if we’d taken a few seconds when we entered to look around at the others, we might have realized that the mood was more one of silence, concentration, perhaps even sadness.

In fact, overdoing it can really make us annoying to others. So it’s totally counterproductive when you want to get on well with others.

2 – But don’t do nothing either

So, yes, you shouldn’t do too much, but you shouldn’t do nothing at all either.

There’s a world of difference between being the person who talks the loudest all the time, who can’t adapt to other people’s moods, and being the person who’s completely self-effacing, who doesn’t speak and barely dares to breathe in the presence of others (laughs).

In fact, to get along well with others, you have to know how to express yourself, how to exist.

Because nobody wants to be friends with someone they know nothing about.

So how do you find that happy medium between doing too much and doing nothing at all?

3 – The art of listening to get on well with others

The art of listening is essential to good relations with others.

The problem is, we haven’t learned to listen to each other.

In the end, when we talk to others, we just bounce off each other.

There’s nothing but “me” everywhere.

In fact, what is listening?

Listening isn’t listening with an eye to what you’re going to say back, it’s really hearing what the other person is saying.

What’s more, it’s listening without judging the person.

Because, of course, the person in front of you may clash with you on certain subjects. Why might that be? Because you’re different.

We’re all different from one another. Even within the same siblings, we’ve had the same upbringing, the same childhood memories, and yet we’re different.

Because we feel things differently.

So, to get along well with others, listen to what they’re saying. Listen without trying to answer, and listen without judging.

Personally, I’ve found that really listening to others is very peaceful. In fact, you no longer feel the need to cut people off, and that feels really good.
