In life, we often cross paths with people who are content to take. In the toxic family, I ask for the daughter. People who rush up to others to grab wise words, advice, tips, comfort, and then leave just as quickly, almost without a thank you, almost without a goodbye.

These people aren’t there when others need them. Too busy minding their own business, too busy with their own navel. Most of them don’t even realize the harm they can do around them, because beyond their toes, they can’t see straight.

WHAT IS MISTAKEN FOR FRIENDSHIP IS NOT FRIENDSHIP AT ALL.
I’m not saying that friendship is giving in the expectation of receiving. Friendship cannot be calculated or reflected upon. There are no stratagems, no interpretations. In friendship, things should be fluid, simple and benevolent.

We should be able to rely on each other, to confide in each other without fear of being judged. Friendship is a relationship that must be fair. If, at any given moment, you feel ill at ease with the other person (envy, jealousy, a feeling of being looked down upon, etc.) and discussion isn’t enough to solve the problem, it’s because the person you thought was your friend is actually toxic.

SPOTTING THOSE WHO TAKE WITHOUT EVER GIVING
Even though we’re not supposed to expect anything in return when we give, some people clearly abuse the kindness of others. And you need to know how to spot them so you can stay away from them. Why spend energy, time and love on people who only care about themselves? Worst of all, the more we give, the more these people expect to receive. It all becomes normal, to the point where they’re capable of making us feel guilty if one day we give a little less than another.

Let’s sort it out.

A person who is only in it for himself, who takes, takes, takes everything he can get from others without ever giving anything, is pretty easy to spot.

1 – NEVER DOES ANYONE ANY FAVORS
Unless it feels like doing a good deed.

2 – SHE’S A TERRIBLE LISTENER
Really listening to others is difficult. When someone’s in a bad way, we want to give them advice, or personal examples of how we’ve overcome a similar situation, and so on.

Yet often, when someone’s not doing well, they just need us to listen without interrupting. They just need to be told that we understand and sympathize. A person who is content to take will be unable to let the subject revolve around the other person for too long. Eventually, it will come back to her, her, her.

3 – SHE NEVER, EVER QUESTIONS HERSELF
Although I find it hard to understand the concept when you spend so much time thinking about yourself. The person who takes without ever giving back is egocentric, yet she never questions her way of being. It’s always someone else’s fault, of course!

Some people should take a step back, question themselves, act with kindness, instead of spreading that bitter aftertaste left by insincerity.

IN MY UTOPIAN WORLD
I’m a goddamn utopian, who thinks we can manage to surround ourselves only with people who are like us. Let’s leave the toxic ones to themselves, and create a carefree world of gentle, balanced relationships, without judgment, without weights on our stomachs. Let’s create a benevolent universe, where everyone takes care of each other in a natural, sincere and beautiful way.

A world where we aim to lift each other up, where we rejoice in each other’s successes, where we feel truly happy for each other’s sake…. where we leave envy, jealousy and put-downs behind.
