3 Good Reasons To Declutter Your Home

I know, I know. That’s (almost) the only word I can think of: declutter.

But what can I say, since I’ve tasted the benefits of decluttering, I’m (almost) hooked. Well, I have to say that the amount of stuff I have to sort is getting smaller all the time, I’m accumulating less and buying less too.

But the benefits are still there! When I feel like starting a sorting session again, I immediately feel the benefits.

What if you were waiting for a few good reasons to get started too (it’s spring, after all!)? What could be more pleasant than sorting, with all the windows open and the sun beating down on your pile of clothes?

1 – DECLUTTERING REDUCES STRESS
It’s scientifically proven: living in a cluttered, messy place increases stress and depression. You should also know that, often, when you’re a bit irritable “for no reason”, it’s because you need to tidy up somewhere in your home. I’ve never been a maniac, but I do know that when I feel stress peaks for no “apparent reason”, it’s usually because a mess has accumulated and I feel overwhelmed. And there’s nothing more stressful than tidying up and having that feeling that it’s still a mess.

2 – DECLUTTERING GIVES YOU CONFIDENCE IN YOUR CHOICES
It was a rather unexpected reaction, but when I first embarked on KonMari sorting (there are many other methods, but this is one that works well for me), I realized, particularly while sorting the books in my library, that my real interests were personal development and caring education. These were (almost) the only books I couldn’t part with. When we make the decision to part with one object rather than another, we take the courage to assert our tastes and choices. Something I didn’t necessarily do before.

3 – DECLUTTERING SAVES TIME IN EVERYDAY LIFE
Even if decluttering itself takes time to accomplish from A to Z, owning fewer objects saves time in daily tidying and cleaning. Less time is needed for dusting, and every item now has its own place, and can be put away almost automatically.

HOW DO YOU GET STARTED?
If you’re feeling really overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, I’d advise you to choose the area of your home that irritates you the most. The one that makes you feel like you’re suffocating as soon as you set foot in it. Once you’re there, choose a small place to sort out: a drawer, a box…

Ask yourself if what you’re holding in your hands makes you happy and/or if it’s indispensable. Ideally, it should be both, but this is something you can achieve once you’re well advanced in your sorting! If you don’t know, start with broken or damaged items for disposal.
