What is jealousy?

What is morbid jealousy? In this case, jealousy is a lively feeling of concern about another’s attachment. It’s also a feeling of wanting the other person to belong to you. It’s hard to define the term, because it depends on the context. For my part, I’d say that moderate jealousy shows love, attachment and the value you place on your partner. For some, jealousy is proof of love, while for others it’s unhealthy within a couple. This is known as “morbid jealousy”, a highly emotional state that can lead to aggression and violence.

The individual who develops such a feeling becomes an investigative agent on the lookout for evidence of his or her partner’s infidelity. They watch their partner’s every word and gesture. They become increasingly curious about their partner’s activities. They may even go so far as to search their partner’s belongings behind them. He gives free rein to his imagination. He always wants to accompany and pick up his partner from work. In short, he’s always in his partner’s way.

LOW SELF-ESTEEM
Morbid jealousy is sometimes the result of low self-esteem. The individual feels he or she is not good enough for his or her partner. He finds himself unable to make her happy, or to give her everything she deserves. This low self-esteem is reflected in phrases like “she doesn’t show any signs of happiness, she must be thinking of someone else”.

The ENVIRONMENT
When you’ve been brought up in an environment where jealousy reigned supreme, it’s more than clear that this will follow you into your own life. ‘Being a child, I always saw my mother pick my father’s pocket behind him looking for evidence of infidelity. I saw my parents arguing because one was falsely accusing the other of cheating, etc.’ These are phrases we often hear in psychotherapy.

FEAR OF LOSING THE LOVED ONE
When you love someone madly, it’s normal to be afraid of losing your partner. This fear can lead to morbid jealousy. The individual is so afraid of losing his or her partner that he or she wants to control everything. All the time, they ask questions and feel threatened, even by the concierge in your apartment.

Morbid jealousy: how to get out of it?

If it’s not taken seriously in time, the one who suffers from it risks finding himself or herself alone. To make sure this doesn’t happen, here are a few therapies you can try if you’re suffering from unhealthy jealousy.

The solutions I present here are therapies, and differ from the simple advice you often read.

PSYCHOTHERAPY
Psychotherapy is one way out of this situation. For most, it will be the first resort. Together with the therapist, the patient must consciously seek out the causes of this condition. They’ll learn how to get rid of them and release their rage in a different way. Obviously, this therapy will take time to produce results. A patient suffering from unhealthy jealousy won’t be particularly keen to talk about his problem in front of a stranger. But if he’s aware of the harm he’s doing to those around him and to himself, and if he’s determined to put an end to it, he’ll let himself go like an open book.

SPORTS
For impulsive people or those suffering from excessive jealousy, sports activities such as taekwondo, karate, judo, etc. are often recommended. These activities require energy. The jealous or impulsive individual will therefore learn to release and channel all his rage and energy through these activities. Of course, you’ll need to choose just one martial art from among those listed to combat morbid jealousy.

HYPNOSIS
Hypnosis is no longer an obvious method for dealing with this kind of disorder, from which anyone can suffer. First, it helps to unconsciously find the causes that lead the individual to this reaction. Then, it will help to retrain the subconscious mind to react differently to situations that may provoke jealousy. We might think that jealousy is voluntary, but in reality it’s just an involuntary reaction dictated by the subconscious.

It’s not uncommon for jealous people to realize what they’ve done after they’ve done it. The task of hypnosis is to reformat the subconscious. SCHULTZ AUTOGENIC TRAINING
Schultz autogenic training is a method for relaxing the body and mind. It involves disconnecting from the world in order to relax through thought. Often equated with self-hypnosis or self-suggestion, in reality it’s nothing of the sort. The processes involved are not the same. It is used in the management of psychosomatic disorders, sports medicine, stress and anxiety management, and can also be used to treat unhealthy jealousy.
