First of all, when researching elements on the sacred feminine, we quickly realize that this field is strongly linked to spirituality. That’s why it’s not for everyone. Neither to all men, nor to all women, although they seem to be the first to be concerned by this concept.

With its codified vocabulary (“sorority”, “moons”, “red tent”), where we speak of divinity in itself, of the womb as the center of the universe, it can at first seem completely inaccessible. So what lies behind this domain, which from the outside may seem a little too spiritual?

Feminine and masculine, a balance to be rediscovered

Many different beliefs, concepts and regions of the world agree on this point: we all have two poles within us. In Asia, we speak of a yin and a yang. In the west, we tend to speak of one side of the brain being rational (Left) and the other more creative (Right). But in spirituality, we also sometimes consider that there is a masculine and a feminine pole in each of us.

Each part lives within us at every moment of our lives, whether we’re a man or a woman. But in different proportions, and not always in balance. For example, men have a more exacerbated masculine side by nature. This makes it difficult for them to connect with their feminine side. They have more developed natural aptitudes, such as strength, determination and action. Women, on the other hand, are more likely to be gentle, sensitive or intuitive… So men who have never developed their feminine side will find it hard to express their emotions, fears or intuition.

And this is where the sacred feminine comes in for women. For just as men have been led to fit into the box of the strong, unfeeling man, women have been led to repress their being. Their natural aptitudes have been turned into defects. So much so that today doing something “like a woman” has become proof of weakness. And yet, by their very nature, all women have an inner strength that is the source of life.

Reconnecting with your feminine magic

Throughout history, even though they were shamans, witches and aware of an invisible world from a very early age, women were brought to their senses, burned or injured when they dared to be fully themselves. It was impossible to fully affirm their feminine side (spiritual, creative, connected). Over the centuries, they were often pigeonholed: mothers, mutes, unable to act without men…

For hundreds of years, they have lived in the shadow of men, abused for being born women (rape, excision). And some of them still experience this kind of violence today. Even now, they are still advised not to cry too much, to repress their creativity and their relationship with the spiritual world. We avoid talking about their periods, we take a dim view of their refusal to breastfeed or bear a child… Certain ideas remain firmly entrenched despite the freedoms that have evolved.

The sacred feminine was born out of all this. It’s about exploring the feminine side of ourselves, repressed by education and history. It invites us to tame our spiritual potential and rediscover our power as women. How does it work? By discovering who they really are, without being dictated to in their choices. By expressing themselves freely. Reconnect with their bodies, their menstrual cycles, their sexuality and certain feminine elements: in particular, the moon.

It’s worth noting, however, that this is not just an area for women. For men, it’s just as important to balance our feminine side and make peace with this part of ourselves.

Why the rise of the sacred feminine now?

Why do so many women seem to be connecting with their sacred feminine right now? Ultimately, it’s probably the same thing that drives everyone to connect with personal development. If we go back to Maslow’s Pyramid, the need for fulfillment is last and highest on the list. While this was different for previous generations, the great advances of the last century have enabled us to be born with some of our needs already fulfilled.

So we can now turn our attention to this need for fulfillment, which may never have crossed the minds of previous generations, as they had other priorities. So we have the chance to evolve personally.

While for some, being fully oneself means fulfilling dreams and repairing wounds, for others, it means reconnecting with the sacred feminine. Similarly, women’s right to vote and abortion are not new. So this generation of women is one of the first to have the choice to be who they want to be and do what they want to do. Reconnecting with one’s true nature is something new to tame, often not passed on by their mothers or grandmothers.

What does this mean in practice?

The sacred feminine is not governed by rules to be followed, since its aim is to find oneself. It’s not about following a model to the letter, but about expressing yourself as a unique being. Despite this, there are a few key principles:

The sacredness of the menstrual cycle: We now know that the menstrual cycle influences women. For example, when they live in a community, we observe that their menstrual periods arrive at the same time. The sacred feminine will therefore pay more attention to this cycle. It advises women to pay more attention to their cycles. For example, they can practice instinctive flow, use natural contraception or listen to their body’s messages.
The link with the moon: The moon, the feminine element par excellence, is important to the sacred feminine. In one way or another, women are connected to it. For example, they notice a restless sleep when the moon is full. So many women decide to perform personal rituals around the time of a full or new moon. Drawing a tarot card, setting intentions, taking a moment for themselves… It’s a way of connecting with their feminine.
The women’s circle: One of the essential notions of the sacred feminine is the idea of sisterhood. Seeing another woman as a sister, not someone to compete with. So, the women’s circle consists in creating a privileged, caring space for women to talk to each other. It’s an opportunity to confide in each other, to grow together, and to talk about our sufferings as well as our pride.
